Ah, those annoying, Deep, very painful pimples that just seem to come at the worst times…
Yes, I’m talking about hormonal acne.
But how do we know if we’re struggling with hormonal acne, or just the common pimple?
Hormonal acne is caused by sudden changes in your hormones.
It’s the fluctuation of progesterone and estrogen hormones, which can vary through different stages of your life.
This can throw off your testosterone levels, and then wreak havoc on your cortisol hormones (stress hormone), and then it just goes down hill from there!
The Most Common Times your Hormones Can Fluctuate:
❀Puberty
❀Menstruation
❀Pregnancy
❀Menopause
Other Ways Your Hormones Could Cause Acne-
❀Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome
❀ When androgen levels increase
How do I know If I Have Hormonal Acne?
Let’s find out 4 common ways to tell if your struggling with hormonal Acne.
1) If Your Breaking Out On The Lower Part of Your Face
I think it’s amazing how the body works! Who knew that breakouts along the lower cheeks and jawline would indicate an imbalance of hormones?
But its true!
Studies have been shown that the oil glands become stimulated from excess hormones.
These oils glands are found around the chin area, and there you have it- hormonal acne!
It’s also very common for hormonal acne to appear on the cheeks and even down the neck.
Deep cystic pimples will be more common instead of just white or black heads.
2) If Your An Adult
Yes, it’s true. Acne is not only for teenagers.
Dang it!
I was very fotunate growing up not having a ton of acne.
That’s why it was a complete surprise when I started breaking out the worst I ever had at age 24!
Statistics estimate that hormonal acne affects 50% of women ages 20-30, and 25% of women 40-50.
Because of the fact that women are much more hormonally active in our 20’s and 30’s, that is why we get hit with hormonal acne.
And since we are in this stage of life of pregnancy, childbirth, and even lactation, our hormones will endure many changes in this time.
3) If Your Having Cystic Pimples
I think everyone would agree that these pimples are the absolute worst!
Yes, they may not have that annoying white or black head, but they are super painful!
And even worse, you can’t extract or do anything to them!
These cystic pimples have accumulated more oil over a longer time period, and as a result, start to show itself as super angry and inflammed.
These usually call for a lot more attention and a longer time period to heal.
4) Your Very Stressed
This is a huge contributor to hormonal acne!
I experienced this first hand, and boy was it not fun!
When you are extremely stressed, your cortisol hormones can cause all of your other hormones to get seriously off track!
This along with your time of the month, can cause a crazy storm of breakouts to happen!
How To Heal Hormonal Acne-
There are many different OTC ways to get your hormonal acne to stop, but since we’re all about healing acne naturally, that is exactly what were going to do!
Before we look into any natural supplements to heal hormonal acne, first and foremost, it’s so important to make sure we are doing the following-

❀Use non comedogenic products (some makeup/skincare ingredients can affect your hormones) see list here.
❀Cleanse properly- I love using the oil cleansing method!
Make a Few Adjustments in Your Diet

❀Eat food high in Omega-3, and less in Omega-6
❀Eat more alkaline foods, less acidic
❀Eat more fiber
Vitex Berry
Vitex Berry, also known as chaste berry, is a womens herb, commonly used to treat hormonal imbalances.
If you are experiencing breakouts along the jawline and chin area, you very likely could be struggling with hormonal acne, and this could be a great supplement for you to take.
Vitex berry has been traditionally used to treat high estrogen levels and also low progesterone levels in women-some causes of our enemy-acne.
Symptoms of High Estrogen Levels:
❀Painful and heavy periods
❀Breast tenderness
❀Bloating
Symptoms of Low Progesterone:
❀Mood swings
❀Acne
❀Depression
❀Anxiety
It’s very important to make sure that you do have imbalanced hormones before you take Vitex berry, or it could result in more flare ups from too high of progesterone levels.
But if you are struggling with some or many of the symptoms above, and have acne on the lower part of your face, you should be good to take it:)
My naturopathic doctor prescribed me Gaia Herbs Vitex Berry, and it has definitely helped to calm my mood swings, and to help bring balance back to my hormones!
But remember this is not a snap of the fingers cure. It takes time to bring back balance, calm your stress levels, and heal your body.
My doctor recommended me to take Vitex for at least 4-6 months. You may want to ask your doctor as well!
